Work from home jobs are the “in” things in the Philippines nowadays. Sadly, with our economic condition still in the “get ready-set-( x )” mode coupled with the crises going on in the middle East equated as lost job opportunities more and more Filipino have to scrimp in order to keep food on their tables. Most people look up to the internet for Work from home job opportunities. But many of these offered opportunities are just scams what with the pay rate reaching as high as US$350 for just a few hours of work usually as mystery shopper, movie critic and e-mailer. I have been receiving such offers from several sources I now find hard to recall.

As I have already resigned to finding a legitimate work from home job I just tried to increase my stock of word vocabulary by playing TextTwist and fortunately by now I have been able to create a dictionary of new English words which is now compiled.

One afternoon I got a text message from a friend telling me to contact a certain mobile phone number and to provide the basic information about me which it requires. So I sent a text message to the said number and after one day I got a phone call from the owner of that number. The person on the other end told me that theirs is a company that is in existence in at least 75 countries and theirs is a US$4.3 billion business. It was impressed upon me that they are looking for someone who can be hired in their HR department and has a computer at home. So I was thrilled to the bones. We agreed to meet on a Saturday in their Makati office for an interview at 10:45am. So I went there and in fact I was at least 20 minutes early than our scheduled meeting.

Inside their office I observed still many people trooping in and I just wondered whether they are also for interview. After registering my name in the company’s logbook I sent a text message to the person whom I was talking to a few days earlier telling that I am already in their office. A few minutes later a young lady comes in and asked for my name to which I said I am that person she was looking for. I was given a sheet of paper to fill up and thereafter we went inside a conference room for the interview. Little did I know that I was being misled. I was being offered to sell Herbalife products instead of something which may qualify me given my condition as a stroke survivor finding it hard to walk fast and with only my right hand to help me type before a computer keyboard. I flatly told my interviewer that it would be hard for me to peddle their goods because of my condition and she even consoled me by saying that I don’t have to sell any product without offering any alternative home for work opportunity. Of what use then will my personal computer be? Our discussion was interrupted by a video presentation of the Herbalife products as well as the testimonies of the supervisors who were present during that day. The testimonies were so pleasing to the ears as Herbalife food supplements enable them to cure the deficiencies within them. The testimony of a former OFW who said he was about to undergo a triple by-pass operation in Saudi Arabia but instead decided to go home fearing the high cost of the treatment there and while in the country tried using Herbalife products. He was thankful for evading the operation and declares that he is now earning P120,000.00 a month. i said to myself that person must be selling otherwise he wouldn’t generate that much income. After the video presentation we all went out of the room to view the products on display. I was asked to shell out P3,750.00 so I can start working with Herbalife. That amount is inclusive of the printed sales paraperhania, some food supplements and a ticket worth P500.00 for a seminar to be held at Dusit Hotel on July 16. I declined and instead decided to leave since I felt I was betrayed.

Right now I am still surfing the web for some legitimate work from home jobs that are fitted to my condition.

Hostage – taking in Manila.

It was as if a very powerful typhoon had lashed the Philippines last August 23, 2010. What the previous administrations tried to build over time was gone in a matter of a few unwanted hours. And as a result, our tourism industry along with international goodwill went for naught. A disgruntled policeman from my hometown Tanauan, Batangas boarded a bus loaded with tourists from neighboring Hong Kong, held them hostage for the rest of the day and later on decided to kill them one by one. The drama was covered live on tv as if it was just a basketball game Filipinos love to watch and play. The situation was calm during the day as the hostage taker, Sr. Inspector Mendoza had released some of the hostages, asked for a power outlet where he could re-charge his cellular phone and received food for his hostages. But, nobody thought that the gruesome fate for the remaining hostages would come. It was so naive of the policemen not to have commanded the media group that certain things must not be covered live lest the hostage taker will become agitated. The hostage taker was being interviewed by a reporter over the radio- RMN Radio – and was seeing on the on-board television that his policeman brother was being arrested by the police that he cried foul and demanded that his brother not be treated shabbily or else he would start shooting the hostages. And within three minutes from that warning he started the carnage. Before that, the reporter interviewing him was trying to call the attention of a Gen. Yebra but he left his position to go elsewhere and thus was unable to be reached.

The hostage taker was a decorated policeman and was one of the top policemen awardee sometime ago. He was accused of robbery extortion by a Filipino chef as well as forcing the said chef to swallow drugs, reports say. His case was heard by the Philippine National Police – Internal Affairs Office and the Regional Trial Court which both dismissed the cases. The Ombudsman though had suspended him. This is one tragic moment for all Filipinos here and abroad. We are a shame in the eyes of the world and the goodwill which the new government hopes to create diminished in just a matter of hours. I mourn for the tourists who died, I mourn for the hostage taker who also died but I mourn more for our country for the opportunities wasted. The world became witness to the shameful acts of the policemen who were acting just like boy scouts during the drama.
